Dinesh Vijan Delays Ikkis Release: Says “This Film Needs Space to Breathe”
Producer Dinesh Vijan has postponed the release of his upcoming war drama Ikkis, starring Agastya Nanda and veteran actor Dharmendra. The film, which was earlier set to release on December 25, 2025, will now hit theatres on January 1, 2026. The main reason behind this change is the huge success of Dhurandhar, which continues to perform strongly at the box office, and the already packed Christmas release period.
Why Ikkis Was Delayed
Vijan, who heads Maddock Films, said that releasing Ikkis alongside major hits would not be the right move. He explained that a film as special and emotional as Ikkis should have enough time and space to reach audiences properly.
He said, “You should make a decision that benefits everyone, including yourself. Ikkis is a film that needs space. We’re fortunate to get a solo release date at the start of the year. This happened before with Chhaava and even with Hindi Medium. Releasing without clutter helps everyone.”
According to reports, the new date gives Ikkis a clear window without direct competition, ensuring that viewers can focus fully on the film without being distracted by other major releases.
Box Office Pressure from Dhurandhar and Others
The initial Christmas week release would have placed Ikkis in a tough position. Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna’s action drama Dhurandhar has been a massive box office success, crossing ₹900 crore worldwide and showing no signs of slowing down. At the same time, other films like Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri (starring Kartik Aaryan and Ananya Panday) and Avatar: Fire and Ash were also set to release in the same period.
This crowded lineup made it difficult for any new film to stand out, regardless of its quality. Vijan’s decision shows a strategic move to protect Ikkis from being overshadowed by blockbusters that are already dominating screens.
He added, “When the new year begins, audiences are ready for fresh stories and good films. It’s good for business when every movie gets some room to perform. If we’re getting a solo release date, why not take the opportunity?”
A Tribute to a Real Hero
Ikkis tells the true story of Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, a brave soldier who was awarded India’s highest wartime gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra. Khetarpal was only 21 years old when he died fighting courageously in the Battle of Basantar during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. His bravery, leadership, and sacrifice have made him one of India’s most respected military heroes.
Agastya Nanda, who is Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson, plays the lead role of Lt Khetarpal. The film also stars Dharmendra in a special role — marking what is expected to be his final appearance on screen. Actor Jaideep Ahlawat plays another key character.
The combination of a real-life heroic story, powerful performances, and emotional depth makes Ikkis one of the most awaited Hindi films. The film is directed by Sriram Raghavan, known for his thrillers like Andhadhun and Badlapur, and promises a mix of strong storytelling and patriotic emotion.
Early Praise and Official Screenings
Even before its release, Ikkis has drawn attention from top officials and celebrities. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended a special screening of the film and honored Lt Khetarpal’s family, showing how deeply the story connects with India’s military and national pride.
Fans are also excited to see Dharmendra on screen again. His daughter Esha Deol recently posted a behind-the-scenes video from his last day of shooting, calling him “the best” and celebrating his dedication to acting even at this stage of his career.
Dinesh Vijan’s Recent Successes
Vijan, who has produced several successful films such as Stree, Mimi, and Bhediya, said he learned the importance of timing and strategy in the film business. He revealed that once upon a time, no one wanted to invest in Stree, but after it turned into a major hit, he gained the confidence to take bold creative decisions.
“With every film, you understand what works best for the story and its audience,” said Vijan. “Sometimes waiting for the right time is better than rushing into a release.”
The Growing Success of Dhurandhar
Meanwhile, Dhurandhar continues to dominate the box office, with Ranveer Singh delivering one of his most appreciated performances in recent years. The film, also starring Akshaye Khanna, has broken multiple records and is being hailed as one of the biggest Indian hits of the decade. Audiences and critics have praised its storytelling, grand visuals, and strong character portrayals.
Given Dhurandhar’s momentum, delaying Ikkis looks like a wise decision. The start of 2026 could be a better time for a film like Ikkis, which depends on emotional depth, word-of-mouth, and audience attention — all of which are difficult to achieve during a crowded festival release.
What’s Next With its new release date of January 1, 2026, Ikkis will open the new year for Bollywood with an inspiring story of courage and sacrifice. The film’s patriotic theme and real-life emotional appeal may help it connect strongly with audiences looking for meaningful cinema.Vijan summed up the decision positively: “When God is giving you a good opportunity, you should take it.”
