MAITREE" Returns to Umroi: India–Thailand Joint Military Exercise (1–14 September 2025) Unites Forces for Peace

India–Thailand Joint Military Exercise "MAITREE" (1–14 September 2025, Umroi)

Start of the exercise

From 1 September 2025, the 14th India–Thailand joint army exercise ‘MAITREE’ will begin at Umroi, Meghalaya. It is an important step to make the partnership between the two armies stronger and more effective.

Aim and Scenario

The main aim of this exercise is to improve the skills of both armies in working together during counter‑terrorism operations, especially in semi‑urban areas, under the United Nations mandate.

India is organizing this event after five years—the last time it was held in India was in 2019 at Umroi.

Past Experiences

The 13th MAITREE exercise (July 2024) was held in Tak Province, Thailand at Fort Vachiraprakarn.

During that time, soldiers practiced:

Weapons training

Day and night firing

Rappelling

Jungle survival skills

Communication drills

First aid and casualty evacuation

Military leaders from both sides stressed the importance of cooperation and thanked each other for the support.

Technical and Tactical Aspects of 2025

Like earlier years, the 2025 exercise will give focus to technology, teamwork, and trust. Soldiers will train in:

Setting up a Joint Operation Centre

Building an Intelligence & Surveillance Centre

Securing landing areas

Small team entry and exit operations

Helicopter‑borne missions

Cordon and search operations

Room clearance and intervention drills

Demolition of illegal structures

Using and countering drones

Role in Bilateral Relations

This exercise is not just about military training. It also shows the strong friendship between both countries.

For India, it supports the “Act East Policy”

For Thailand, it matches their “Act West Policy”

Relations also include trade, investment, tourism, culture, education, science, and people‑to‑people contact.

Future Importance

Past exercises (2019 and 2024) have built a solid base for defense cooperation. The 2025 exercise will help in planning future defense partnerships and also contribute to peace and stability in the region and the world.

The 14th MAITREE exercise (1–14 September 2025, Umroi) is more than just a military event. It is a symbol of friendship and growing defense ties between India and Thailand.

It will not only strengthen joint military skills but also show a positive international image of India–Thailand relations, especially under the UN and multilateral security systems.
