Beloved Punjabi Actor-Comedian Jaswinder Bhalla Dies at 65
Mohali, August 22, 2025 — Famous Punjabi actor and comedian Jaswinder Bhalla passed away on Friday morning, August 22, 2025, after a short illness. He was 65 years old. Bhalla took his last breath at Fortis Hospital in Mohali after suffering a brain stroke earlier in the week.
Doctors confirmed that the stroke was the reason for his death. He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday after falling ill, and friends said his health had been weak for a few days.
Life & Career
Jaswinder Bhalla was born on May 4, 1960, in Ludhiana, Punjab. He completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. in agriculture education from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), and later earned his Ph.D. from CCS University, Meerut.
He started teaching at PAU in 1989 and went on to become Professor and Head of the Department of Extension Education, before retiring in 2020.
Along with his academic career, Bhalla began his entertainment journey in 1988 with the comedy audio series Chhankata 88, where he introduced his popular character Chacha Chatar Singh. Over more than 30 years, he became one of the most loved faces of Punjabi comedy, working in hit movies like Carry On Jatta (as Advocate Dhillon), Jatt & Juliet, Mahaul Theek Hai, Mel Karade Rabba, and many more.
His last movie appearance was in Shinda Shinda No Papa (2024).
Tributes & Funeral
People from cinema, politics, and fans all over Punjab expressed sadness at his passing. Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said, “Chacha Chatra will always remain in our hearts.”
Actors like Gippy Grewal, Neeru Bajwa, Binnu Dhillon, and leaders such as Sukhbir Singh Badal also shared their heartfelt condolences.
His funeral will take place on Saturday, August 23, at 12 PM at Balongi Cremation Ground in Mohali, where his family, friends, and colleagues will join to pay their last respects.
