Historic homes of Mumbai: Memories of Ambedkar, Gandhi, Tilak, Jinnah, Tata, and Rafi."

Mumbai has been home to many great leaders and personalities. The city has historic houses like Dr. Ambedkar’s Rajgruha, Gandhi’s Mani Bhavan, Tilak’s Sardar Griha, Jinnah House, Jamshedji Tata’s Esplanade House, and Mohammed Rafi’s Rafi Mansion. These are not just homes, but living symbols of India’s history, culture, and freedom struggle."

Dr.B.R Ambedkar:-

Rajgruha, located in Dadar, Mumbai, was the former home of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and is now an important memorial. This three-storey building once served as his residence and today has a heritage museum on the ground floor. For Ambedkar’s followers and Dalits, it is a place of pilgrimage, especially before the annual gathering at Chaitya Bhoomi on 6 December. Rajgruha also holds one of the biggest private libraries of its time, with over 50,000 books collected by Ambedkar. It remains a valuable place to learn about his life and work and is considered sacred by his followers."

Jinnah House:-

Jinnah House in Mumbai is a historic mansion that once belonged to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, before Partition. Built in 1936 at Malabar Hill, the property is famous for its Italian marble work and Art Deco style. Spread over 2.5 acres, it was designed by British architect Claude Batley. After Partition, when Jinnah moved to Pakistan, the house became the subject of legal disputes and was later marked as ‘evacuee property’."

Mahatma Gandhi:-

Mani Bhavan in Mumbai was Mahatma Gandhi’s residence from 1917 to 1934 and is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. During his stay, it became a center of his political activities, including the start of major national movements. Today, Mani Bhavan stands as an important symbol of Gandhi’s legacy, with a library, photo gallery, and the room where he stayed. It also has mini displays showing key events from his life. The place is an important resource for understanding Gandhi’s ideas and his work."

Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak:-

Sardar Griha, also known as Lokmanya Tilak’s Mumbai residence, is a historic building where Bal Gangadhar Tilak stayed during his visits to the city. Located on the road leading to Crawford Market, it was a guest house for Indians at a time when most guest houses were reserved for Europeans. Sardar Griha became a meeting place for freedom fighters, where Tilak held discussions and planned for India’s independence. Tilak passed away in this building, in his room on the fourth floor (Flat 198)."

Jamshedji Tata:-

Jamshedji Tata’s residence in Mumbai was Esplanade House, located in the Kala Ghoda area. Built in the late 1880s, it was one of the first residential buildings in Bombay (now Mumbai) to have electric lights, hidden wiring, and an elevator. Designed by James Morris, it was built on a 999-year lease. Although it is no longer owned by the Tata family, it is now managed by the R.D. Sethna Scholarship Fund. This historic house remains an important part of the Tata family’s legacy and Jamshedji Tata’s life."

Mohammad Rafi:-

Rafi Mansion in Bandra was the home of the legendary playback singer Mohammed Rafi. Built in the 1970s, it housed his personal belongings, awards, and musical instruments. This was where he lived and created many of his famous songs. Although the original structure was later replaced by an apartment building, Rafi’s memories and legacy still echo here and live on in the hearts of his fans. The house remains a symbol of his life and work, and is a special place for his admirers."
