On Thursday, the Supreme Court gave permission to cut 95 trees in Mumbai’s Film City for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project. The bench of Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran was hearing a petition from the BMC, which is handling this major project. In the petition, the BMC had asked the court to allow tree cutting for the first phase of development."
As per Senior Advocate Dhurv Mehta:-
Senior advocate Dhruv Mehta told the bench that the tree authority had already given its approval, but the final decision depends on the court. Meanwhile, the Chief Justice asked Mumbai’s forest officer to submit a detailed report within six weeks, showing the compensatory tree plantation done so far in the city. The BMC assured the court that it will follow all rules for compensatory afforestation, including the requirement of geo-tagging the saplings planted in place of the cut trees."
On July 29, the Supreme Court stressed the need on to balance environmental protection with development. It allowed the Tree Authority to decide on BMC’s request to cut 95 trees for the project. The GMLR project aims to create a direct road link between the Western Express Highway and the Eastern Express Highway, which will reduce travel time between Mulund and Goregaon by about one hour."
The BMC filed the petition keeping in mind the Supreme Court’s order of January 10. In that order, the court had told the municipal Tree Authority not to allow even a single tree to be cut in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony without its permission in the future."
